A working principle of centrifugal pump is simple to understand, centrifugal pump is one of the simplest pieces of equipment. its purpose is to convert energy of a prime mover (a electric motor) first into kinetic energy and then into pressure energy of a fluid that is being pumped.
The energy changes occur mainly by the two main part of the pump, the impeller and the volute or we can say diffuser casing. The impeller is the rotating element that converts driver energy into the kinetic energy. The volute or diffuser casing is the stationary part that converts the kinetic energy into pressure energy.
Now we will see the difference between Centrifugal pump and Reciprocating pump.
Centrifugal Pump / Reciprocating Pump
1.
They run at high speed i.e 3000+ rpm / They run at very low speed and need speed reducing device.
2.
Pump flow decreases with the increase in delivery head. / Pump flow does not change with the variation in delivery head
3.
Efficiency for head up to 60 mtr is good in single stage. / Suited for high head over 60 mtr.
4.
Mostly used of cold and clear water. / Can be used for viscous liquid.
5.
The liquid flow is continuous. / The liquid flow is pulsates.
6.
Efficiency may vary from 40% to 90%. / Efficiency is up to 40% in small capacity pumps.
7.
If selected accurately as per duty selected as per duty cycle optimum range is over 60%. / Can be as high as 85% in larger size.
